Formal Requirements for FortyPlus Activities (effective January 1, 2005)
This page was updated on June 15, 2006 and is a work in progress for existing activity leaders or those who are interested in becoming leaders. Please check frequently for new updates.
- Each activity must be conducted in accordance with AMC requirements. See www.outdoors.org/volunteers/leadership/index.cfm
- Each activity must be approved by the activity coordinator.
- Each activity must have a certified leader (see “How to become a Leader or
Co-Leader”) and at least one certified co-leader. Multiple co-leaders are
strongly suggested - especially for trips with large numbers of participants.
Leaders may co-lead; but co-leaders may not lead.
- Cancellation of an activity - In general, it is not acceptable to cancel a
trip. There are circumstances when it might be necessary. It is your duty, as
leader, to notify any trip registrants and the Activity Coordinator if
you do cancel an event. The following reasons, however, will suffice:
- Circumstances or weather make it unsafe to conduct
the event. (For example, extreme weather.) In this event, it is the duty of the
leader to cancel the trip. These will often be judgment calls.
- Insufficient interest. If there are too
few registrants, you can cancel the trip. Establish a minimum number for the
event.
- Incapacity of the leader and an inability
to recruit a substitute. A trip MUST have a leader. Any but the very gentlest
trip MUST have a co-leader. Co-leaders who have not qualified as leaders cannot
take over the lead of a trip without a leader present.
- If the leader or a co-leader becomes incapacitated - for
example ill or injured - it is the responsibility of the leader to try to find
a substitute leader or notify the activity coordinator to help recruit a
substitute leader. This will usually be on short notice and we recognize that it
may not be possible. Notifying the participants is still required.
- The Coordinators of each of the Forty Plus
activities will maintain a current list of leaders and publish it annually.
