Approved AMC FortyPlus Leadership Requirements - 2005
A prospective leader needs to:
1. Have a current membership in the AMC.
2. Show proficiency in the activity for which he/she wishes to be a leader. The level of proficiency will be determined by the Coordinator of the activity. There are five activities with coordinators: hiking, biking, paddling, skiing/snowshoeing, local walks (meanderings).
3. Determine which activity (ies) leadership is desired and let that be known.
4. Have satisfactorily completed 40+ Leadership Training, Leadership Training courses given by any chapter of the AMC, Mountain Leadership School, or an equivalent outdoor leadership training program. (Training equivalency will be determined by the Coordinator of the activity you wish to lead.)
5. Exhibit good judgment, positive attitude, patience, organizational skills, and people management skills. (The Coordinator of the activity you wish to lead evaluates these skills.)
When the above criteria are met, the leadership candidate may begin co-leading trips.
6. A prospective leader needs to co-lead three 40+ trips, within two calendar years, in the desired activity. Upon acceptable reviews from the leader of each trip you may be considered for leader status. If you believe you have fulfilled the requirements, inform the Coordinator who will review the reports of the leaders of the trips co-led. The entire Forty Plus Board will review and vote upon acceptance.
7. Longer trips such as climbing a 4000’ mountain, or any hiking, skiing, biking, or paddling trip expected to be more than one hour away from medical aid requires that either a leader or co-leader of the trip be currently certified in Wilderness First Aid (WFA) or a higher level of First Aid.
8. Leadership status is good for two years. If you do not lead a Forty Plus trip for two years you may need to re-qualify. Prequalification will be at the discretion of the Forty Plus Board.
9. Proposal(s) for leadership should be submitted to the appropriate activity coordinator. Leaders of other AMC chapters or committees or those with extensive leadership experience in other organizations may be certified as Forty Plus leaders by approval of the executive board.
